Who’s Sock Monkey?

Who’s Sock Monkey?

Well… me, of course! DUH! oh… wait, you don’t know me?! Right… I’m me.

My civilian name is Dew, but you can call me by my derby name: Sock Monkey. I’m new to the whole roller derby world.  I figured a blog would help me document my progress and help other chicas out there that might be new to the sport as well. I’m not a great writer, nor can I keep a fluid thought most days, but for YOU, I’ll try. 😛 I hope to offer lots of info, tips, product reviews, and whatever it is derby is speaking to me for the day. Feel free to comment and subscribe. 🙂

I first found out about Roller Derby back when I heard about Whip-It. I thought it looked like fun, so I started researching… last summer (09). I really started liking the idea of joining, but then moved to a sucky.. I mean small town in West Texas from Tampa Bay, FL. Feeling totally bored and on the verge of jumping off a cliff from before mentioned boredom, I found that someone started a league here in my little town of Lubbock!! YAY! So, naturally, I went all out. Bought skates, pads, helmet. I got out on the neighborhood tennis courts and… woops! I guess I forgot that I hadn’t skated since I was a pre-teen! Also forgot that I have had two kids, and totally out of shape! So, as determined as I can get, I started a wicked diet/exercise plan. 40 lb loss later, I was ready to try again. I contacted the local league and set up a time to come in and try it out. I could barely stand upright and fell over and over and over… but I was determined to like this and be good at it (still working on that). So that day in late Feb 2010 was the day that my life changed. I still pretty much suck at all aspects of derby, but I’m trying. My addiction to derby puts me in a crazy place constantly looking for new info or wishing it was practice day already. (we practice 3x week) One aspect of derby I did not expect, is that I might actually get along with the girls… I mean what are the chances of a group of 40ish women all getting along? We range in age from early 20’s to late 40’s, college students to moms to grandmas. We all have our little quirks and alter egos that just makes derby that much more entertaining. Roller Derby is a refreshing journey that I’ve got a first class seat on and I think I’m going to make some great friends along the way. 🙂

Man, did all that sounds familiar?! I started looking into derby when we were on the east coast too, then as soon as I bought gear and found a team, we came down on orders (via military) and now live in west Texas. I JUST started last week! I’m ridiculously excited! Glad I found your blog.
